Liquid Consistencies
Thin Liquids
Thin liquids includes all liquids either thin or thick. The liquid consistencies for those with this fluid consistency are unaltered & unrestricted.
**Note that there is an IDDSI liquid consistency in between thin liquids & nectar thick liquids which is termed “Slightly thick”. Testing using IDDSI methodology to determine accurate consistency is recommended.
Nectar Thick Liquids
Nectar Thick liquids are those that have the liquid consistency of nectar juices such as peach & apricot nectar's. All fluids including water must have the same liquid consistency as these nectar juices, as indicated by the name. Some nutritional shakes are nectar thick but the consistency must be approved for consumption by a licensed SLP.
The IDDSI liquid consistency closest to nectar thick would be “Mildly thick”. Testing using IDDSI methodology to determine accurate consistency is recommended.
Honey Thick Liquids
Honey Thick liquids are thicker than nectar thick liquids. Honey thick liquids, as indicated by the name have the consistency of honey. These liquids are also the same consistency as liquidized textures (drinkable pureed textures).
The IDDSI liquid consistency closest to nectar thick would be “Moderately thick”. Testing using IDDSI methodology to determine accurate consistency is recommended.
Spoon/Pudding Thick Liquids
Spoon/Pudding Thick liquids are the thickest of the liquid consistencies. Again, as the name indicates, all fluids with this liquid consistency must be the same consistency as pudding. These liquids are also the same consistency as pureed textures.
The IDDSI liquid consistency closest to Spoon/Pudding thick would be “Extremely Thick”. Testing using IDDSI methodology to determine accurate consistency is recommended.
Other Liquid restriction terminology
1. Iced Thin liquids: All liquids must be chilled using ice with ice remaining in the glass.
2. Thermal liquids: All liquids must be Hot or Cold dependent on recommendations from a speech language pathologist
